The California Masonic Symposium is an annual joint educational program of the Grand Lodge of California, the California Masonic Foundation and the Institute for Masonic Studies.

The topic of this year's Symposium is The Emergence of Speculative Masonry.

The discussion will be guided by the research of Henry Wilson Coil Lecturer A. Trevor Stewart, Ph.D., who will investigate how the working tools and techniques of medieval stonemasons' guilds became the symbolic platform for the ethical system we know as speculative Masonry.

An accomplished group of renowned Masonic scholars will complement Stewart's presentation with their respective expertise:

  • Shawn E. Eyer, M.A., will discuss the development of speculative Freemasonry in organizational identity and legend.
  • Timothy W. Hogan will explain Masonic symbolism, alchemical practices, and Rosicrucian traditions, and will demonstrate an alchemical process.
  • Thomas D. Worrel, M.A., M.B.A., will reveal the connections between Freemasonry and alchemy, including their shared use of allegoric symbols and process involving transformation.

The lecturers will be joined by a panel of scholarly colleagues, including Senior Grand Warden John L. Cooper III, Ph.D. and Past Grand Master R. Stephen Doan.

There is no charge to attend the Symposium, however an optional box lunch is being offered for $15 per person.  The dress for the Symposium is Business Attire.
